Welcome to the new website of the Behavioral Ecology and Conservation Lab (BECon-Lab), located at Nuremberg Zoo in the city of Nuremberg, Germany. At BECon-Lab, we are dedicated to advancing zoo-related research, with a emphasis on sensory ecology, animal welfare studies and veterinary sciences. Our work extends beyond the confines of the zoo environment; we engage in fundamental research primarily focusing on sensory ecology and ethology, exploring how animals perceive and interact with their environments.

We are excited to integrate innovative approaches in our research, including the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to analyze data and gain deeper insights into animal behavior and welfare. Additionally, our lab has a strong focus on bioacoustics, enabling us to study animal communication and the acoustic environments they inhabit. By combining these cutting-edge methodologies with our ecological expertise, we aim to enhance our understanding of animal life and its implications for conservation.

In the realm of veterinary science, we conduct innovative research in endocrinology, examining the hormonal processes that influence animal health and behavior. By understanding the endocrine systems of various species, we aim to identify how hormonal changes can affect animal welfare, reproduction, and overall physiological well-being. This research is pivotal for developing targeted interventions to improve the health and care of animals in both zoo and wild settings.

Furthermore, BECon-Lab is committed to providing scientific support for various nature conservation projects, ensuring that our research not only contributes to academic knowledge but also has a positive impact on wildlife preservation efforts.
